Forget-me-not Pencils!

This is, (hopefully), my final comic for the RAIN anthology I'm working on! It's written by the lovely Kelsey Donald, and drawn by yours truly. 7 pages of brainwashing aliens and a break-up-quasi-love story.  Stay tuned :)

The Life and Times of Maurice Freidman

The story of my Great Uncle, Maurice, pieced together with the help of my Dad.  It was for a class assignment a year ago, recently fished it out of my hard drive and edited it for my Uncle Allen.

It's one of my messier comics, it suits Maurice, but I wish it was a bit cleaner.  I also inked it with a broken lettering nib, which was the last time I used one.

97 Orchard St

I got to stand outside at work on Tuesday next to the balloons and try to direct passerbys to the Lower East Side Tenement Museum.  The morning was a bit slow,  so I fished this envelope out of the recycling and drew what was across the street from me, 97 Orchard St.

Pencils for the Rain Anthology

The 8 page story doesn't have a title yet, but these are the first two pages for an Anthology called Rain I'm participating in with some friends.  I am also apparently not sick of North African fo-Moroccan reference yet.  Stay tuned!

Jesus Loves Lesbians, Too

http://jesusloveslesbianstoo.com/

Check out the memoir webcomic I have been illustrating!   The comic is the main reason I haven't been updating as much, but pretty worth it from my end.  It has been a lot of fun to work on and it updates twice a month.  Stay tuned :)

Jirel Meets Magic pencils

I'm working on an excerpt of Jirel Meets Magic by Catherine L. Moore.  Jirel Meets Magic is a Sword & Sorcery story that graced the American pulp magazines of the 1930s, and features awesome female characters who have never gotten a decent visual representation.  Until now hopefully.  These are some penciled pages of my adaption.

My best apartment huntin' story

Concepts

So I've been scrapping ideas for an anthology like theres no tomorrow,  my current idea is to do a buddy story with two petty criminals from the same country that Novice took place in. I thought I wanted to do something modern, and then these ladies reminded me how much fun I had with historical reference and costumes.

Then again, these characters may never see the light of day again, who knows? In any event, due to the rough paper of my current sketchbook, I've been doing a lot of fast and furious drawings with various ball point pens.  It's kind of crude, but fun and I'm not tired of it yet.

Manolin

I'm packing to move and moving bursting open files of art as a result.  I came across this Manolin illustration, back from the Old Man and the Sea project in the winter. Pen, ink, and brush on bristol.

Sketches

I've probably been walking by this for the last two years and not seeing it, it's pretty incredible.  If anyone is walking or biking on the Manhattan side of the Williamsburg Bridge, keep your eyes peeled.

But before I saw the car garden, I drew Monica playing ukulele and sitting on the couch in Maryland.

Novice is getting colored

I'm using a very limited color palette and this how it's looking as of now! It's really interesting to use color as a storytelling element instead of a 'these are the colors these things are' mindset, I'm liking it.

Novice pages

Two of my favorite pages from Novice, these two were in the Open Studio show last night.

What the nib holding industry doesn't want you to know...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=68wqQKm18rY&feature=player_embedded

Check it out! My roommate put together an infomercial for her internship with Matt Madden and Jessica Abel, I helped her out with it.  Inking secrets revealed! A must see ---especially if you're a nib user.

ZAD cover-v1

Here's the 90% done version of the Zombie Ass Zombie Dinosaurs cover!

It's 17.5 x 8.5" watercolored and touched up in photoshop. I need to puzzle together another scan or two to patch up the bottom left hand corner, but I think it turned out pretty well.

ZAD in color

This is the only  Zombie Ass Dinosaurs page I've colored.   Hopefully more coming soon...in the future!

ZAD cover-color study

Soon to be a large water color illustration for a future book cover.

Amtgard in two pages

An assignment for my Underground Comics class, we needed to pick a subculture and do a two page comic about it.   It was a colorful and educational critique, let me tell you.   I've been playing Amtgard since I was 15, I wanted to do a dumpster diving comic, but this felt more natural.

Would-be Novice cover

I really like it, but it's misleading as a cover and has little to do with the story.  So, now it's a captivating promo image, don't you want to read this comic?

Origin Story

At least it's more exciting than Hawk Girl's origin story.  I mean really.

Space for RENT...in Latveria

So Nick Bertozzi usually has his storytelling class  do war stories from recent primary resources, students usually get really good comics out of them.  But when I took his class last spring he said he was too depressed to do war stories and instead told us to find the most ridiculous fanfiction we could and adapt it to a four page comic.

I found Space for RENT in Latveria, written by the mysterious Swamp Thing in the crossover musical section of fanfiction.net (I highly recommend checking out that section, I don't think there's anything like it.)   With the artistic challenge of  RENT meets the Fantastic Four, I figured I'd do this thing the right way, aka the Jack Kirby way.  Here's the end result:

It was a really fun class and we may have had one of the best critiques ever in art school history.  People from other classes sat in to witness the slew of  fanfic comics.  And if anyone knows Swamp Thing, I'd appreciate passing this along, I'd really like to show it to them.

An incredible chain of events came from a homework assignment for my Obstacle Course class.  We had an assignment that called for minimal drawing and writing, something akin to a comic remix, in the spirit of Garfield Minus Garfield.  I ended up taking panels from the Essential Flash that only had Barry Allen's generic love interest in them, such as:

So I erased the words, and replaced them with dialogue from Allison Bechdel's Dykes to Watch Out For, with this result:
I was pretty happy with it, and then at the critique, my teacher said something along the lines of, "This is really great, I should send it to Allison." And I got a lovely email from her last weekend! This comic has her blessings! I still can't get over how incredible that is! And if it couldn't get better, she put my comic on her blog!  Check it out if you want.  She included her original page I took the words from in the blog post.   http://dykestowatchoutfor.com/appropriation

That concludes my fairy tale adventure with back and forth emails with the legendary Allison Bechdel.

My Unborn Children

Plastic restraint experimental comic for Matt Madden's class. Anxiety is a great pool of inspiration sometimes.

Santiago

This is my finished Old Man in the Sea character concept! But I'm going more for old shaman woman and the sea, Inuit style.  If I have time I'll color my Manolin to go with her.

Bimwili illustration

Here's my first illustration for my fairy tale theory class! I'm illustrating Bimwili and the Zimwi, a fairy tale from Zimbabwe that scared the crap out of me as a kid.  It's about a girl who's kidnapped by a monster and held captive in a drum where she's forced to sing.

Splash page coming soon!

Funny Ramen Dream

I've been having amusing dreams recently.  This one co-starred my sister, Rachael, who stayed completely in character.  Because it'll be her birthday in 8 minutes, this wacky dream comic is for her!

This is a comic from Matt Madden's Obstacle Course.  We needed to make a comic based on a word ladder,  I started with the words "find" and "lose" and it took me 10 words to connect them.  I'm hoping it's readable, the only non-artist who's laid eyes on it thus far said it was weird.

The Three Little Gamers

I've been doing this web comic since last August, for gamefanboys.com  It's on hold at the moment, but it should pick back up in the tear future and y'all should check it out! It's about the lives of three roommates of varying levels of geekdom.

http://www.gamefanboys.com/search/label/Monthly%20Comic

It's also a well loved cartooney outlet for me.
Hey internet! Going to start blogging up a storm, if you're interested, stay tuned! Sketches and comics coming soon.
