The Mermaid - sketch

Inspired by the opening and ending sequence of Jan Siegel's Prospero's Children.  (Great book!) Thinking of doing an oil painting of this scene, the mermaid decorating Raf's corpse.

I haven't painted in oil in four years, and my last painting was also mermaid theemed.  Welp, I never pretended I didn't like mermaids :p

Lady Fire

Quick illustration of the monster Lady Fire from Kristin Cashore's Fire. I loved the books series and  although Fire was probably my least favorite of her series, this character stuck in my head.  I loved the heroic lonely monster woman who is determined to be the last of her species, and she is a musician of all things. Anyway, fun sketch, and color holding that hair was less of a pain then I thought it would be!

Jirel Meets Magic, inks

Some of you may recall that I penciled an exert of Jirel Meets Magic by Catherine L. Moore.  Jirel Meets Magic is a Sword and Sorcery story from the 1930s that I am quite fond of, it is your standard high fantasy S&S story, but casted with mainly female characters, which gives it points in my book.  The first phase of my adaption can be seen here http://maggiesiegelberele.blogspot.com/2011/08/jirel-meets-magic-pencils.html

And here are the inks I've been working on! Enjoy em :) I'm still trying to figure out if I should color them and if so, how/ what medium.  Any insight in that department would be greatly appreciated!

Rooftop Fight

The Department of Education canceled school buses this week due to the gas shortage, so I haven't been working much.  On the plus side, I did this fun illustration! Hope y'all like it.

Scout Watercolor

A quick watercolor based on other Amtgard pictures.  This one is based off of a pic of one of our Assassins, Wynter, in the Scout competition.

Harry Potter page

I was sick through most of the hurricane, but while I had energy and no freelance to work on, Nathaniel told me to do a Harry Potter comic, and I couldn't get the idea out of my head, so whala!

A small exert of page 330-1 of the Order of the Phoenix.  It was a lot of fun to do...except for the library books.  The library books were kind of awful :p

Spotlight on Irwin Hasen at NYCC

A great, funny, all over the place panel moderated by Danny Fingeroth.   Turns out that Irwin Hasen, the golden age comic artist, is hilarious.  The panel turned into a bunch of awesome older cartoonists telling stories about him,  while he interrupted them, swore, and kept yelling that he couldn't hear a thing.

Turns out the Stan who's last name I didn't know is Stan Goldberg.

Inktober!

No pencils here, it was all done straight in ink.  It was lovely not having to erase anything.

Inspired by pictures of my Amtgard group and the badass healer at our park, Chanharia.  We had a sphinx in a quest recently, so I added one in.

Happy Inktober y'all :)

Galla Con 2012

I was invited to Galla Con at NYU by my former teacher, Dave King.  It was pretty awesome and I saw panels on LGBT in comics, women in comics, and comics publishers/publishing.  This sketch is from the Women in Comics segment.

This was my second time seeing Heidi MacDonald on a panel about "Women in Comics", and as she once said, "Those who don't know the history of women in comics are doomed to go to panels about the history of women in comics."

Fiddler Girl

A fun sketch.  Wish I could come up with a story around her, she was so so so fun to draw.

Warrior in black + white

A quick illustration today, because I have no outlet for my textured and detailed fantasy-ish art.  Hopefully more coming soon!

Sketches from Bethany Beach

My dad playing banjo.

My sister tanning and a still life of things we brought to the beach with us.

My mom sleeping.
Having cable TV for a week has always been a novelty with my family, and some Harry Potter movies were on, which I have seen very little of.  Any way, this stellar HP sketch was done by my sister and I 50/50, I love it :)

More sketches sis and I did together, we drew the nose first on all of the faces.  And the upside down bug girl at the top started out as a botched nose.

Hanging out with Rach and singing with her while she was fooling around on the uke.

My dad at the beach, trying to drink the beers left over from Chanukah.

And sketches from the rental place while my aunt was reading her short story to us.

Sketches from Grand Central

A week ago on my way to teach a manga workshop in CT, the typical New York City cliche happened and I found myself stranded at Grand Central for an hour and a half.  Good thing I had my skethcbook!

What I've Been Sketching

I've been drawing a lot of faces, trying to draw more faces that don't look like mine or Nathaniel's, which is harder then it sounds for me :p

Drawing faces that are mine!

Sketching Ian's room when Hilary and I were over there making art.

And sketching some fun fantasy what-not in different styles.

And that is some of what I've been drawing and sketching recently.  I've been going a bit on the heavy side with colored pencil, and I'm not tired of it yet :)

Another Colored Pencil Study

I have fantasy-ish whatnot on the brain and it is coming out in colored pencil.  More to come!

Chalk Pastel Studies

The kids I work with use chalk pastels a lot and I've been meaning to try my hand at them again.  These  were quick really fun to do and ridiculously messy.

Lion Walk

Another practice illustration, I am really enjoying fooling around with the coloring.  Also that lion was fun, I  should draw more lions.
